Subsea technology can be viewed as one of the oil and gas industry’s greatest achievements. Over the past few decades, being involved both as an engineer and observer of offshore technology, I have watched subsea solutions transform the way we approach offshore developments, enabling the industry to open up new producing regions in ever deeper waters around the world, while also driving the innovation required to sustain production from existing fields.
The global demand for energy continues to rise and in this context the growth projections for subsea developments are very positive. But can the subsea industry truly grow to meet this demand, or is subsea becoming the victim of its own success with manufacturing capacity becoming overstretched?
Such challenges are already confronting the subsea industry today. To achieve the growth in subsea developments that is envisaged will require new thinking in the industry, and this, the 18th Underwater Technology Conference in Bergen, has been structured to stimulate the debate on how that growth can be attained.
