Track 2@ Peer Gynt Drilling and subsea well operations
16:30 - 17:00 Introduction of riser less drilling in deep water
Bjørn H Knudsen
Introducing deep water riserless drilling gives possible operational and commercial benefits. Implementation can reduce handling and inspection costs, and need for make-up mud volume due to absence of conventional 21 ft riser. It may also be possible to reduce total time for well drilling operation by fewer casing sections. However, before realization of such a new concept/technology, several steps must be further taken into consideration, such as: • Requirements for barriers, regulations and standards must be met • The technology involve new equipments and methods that needs to be managed and maintained in a safe manner • The complexity of the well control management. The method/technology must above all, ensure the safety of rig personnel, the environment, and the well. The riserless drilling is a method that is expected to save costs by increased drilling efficiency for the operator, and in some cases provide access to fields that would otherwise not be possible to develop.
