DNV together with the drilling industry has developed a series of Recommended Practices for structural design and operation of drilling and well systems. The aim in creating the new RP series is to provide a framework regarding structural integrity for the entire drilling and well system in a systematic manner. The new RP series tackles issues such as system engineering and interface design as well as providing detail guidance on strength and fatigue calculation and information management. The RP development is part of an ongoing joint industry project (JIP) facilitated by DNV with participation from BG Group, BP, Chevron, Det Norske, Eni, ExxonMobil, GDF Suez, Lundin, Marathon, Nexans, Shell, Statoil, Talisman, Total and Woodside. At the core of the RP series, specific guidance on wellhead fatigue analysis methodology is provided. Having combined the strengths of the wellhead fatigue methodologies available in the industry today, the RP specifies a uniform approach for selecting methodologies for wellhead fatigue assessment based on the specific conditions for a subsea well. By having a consistent analysis approach, the variety of challenges which influence the modeling and outcome of wellhead fatigue can be uniformly addressed and included in operational planning.
