Subsea Gas Compression: enhancing gas recovery, improving energy efficiency, enabling long term LNG supply
Gas is increasingly in the spotlight geopolitically, but also for its potential to support the energy transition. Applying subsea gas compression can enhance gas recovery while reducing energy consumption compared to traditional compression alternatives. Chevron Australia and Aker Solutions are working to do just this at the Jansz-Io gas field in Australia.
In our day two special focus plenary session, Alberto Montesi, Delivery Manager, Jansz-Io Compression, Chevron Australia, and Øystein Haukvik SVP, Aker Solutions Project Director, will jointly walk us through the latest in subsea compression, focusing on the Chevron-operated Jansz-Io Compression project offshore Australia.
“Jansz-Io builds on the Asgard compression project delivered to Equinor in 2015. It’s been in successful continuous operation since then and has shown the market the value of this technology.” – Øystein.
“At Jansz-Io, Chevron Australia and Aker Solutions are taking the next step in using this technology in more challenging conditions: deeper water, higher pressure. We are really showing the potential for broader use of subsea compression across gas assets while securing long-term LNG supply to all our customers, in Australia and the Asia Pacific.” – Alberto.

Why is UTC a great place to hear about these issues?
Øystein, “UTC is unique. There are many professionals who look forward to this every year as the key arena for exchanging experience and knowledge, for hearing about new developments and new technology and the critical challenges we face. The energy transition particularly is important for everyone now in this market to hear about and be a part of.”
Alberto, “Historically, Norway has been at the forefront of the development of subsea technology, so it makes UTC a special place to hear about new developments and also to share our perspective.”
Transition is also about people; recruitment and retention. Is this an increasing challenge?
Alberto, “For Chevron, we often talk about the ‘why’? Why are you coming to work? For us it’s about delivering reliable, affordable, ever- cleaner energy to the world.
“On the Jansz-Io Compression project, we have been able to work through the pandemic, using new tools and technologies to work remotely. Now we are emerging from the pandemic, we are maintaining a hybrid model – combining remote and in-office work – which allows flexibility. This isn’t the old industry, where we have to be in the office every day, and a better work-life balance is important to our people and to the next generation of employees.
Øystein, “The main challenge for us, going forward, is to attract the right people into this market. We see the same challenge everywhere. We need new talent and we need to attract young people. Focusing on both technology and energy transition is very important in that aspect and I think we are able to illustrate that at UTC, that we have that focus as an industry.”
