TechnipFMC Pilots Green Hydrogen Offshore Energy System

TechnipFMC will lead a consortium to construct and test its green hydrogen offshore energy system, Deep Purple, in Norway.

Innovation Norway granted financial support to realise the €9 million pilot project in December 2020.

Advanced Offshore Energy Systems

The pilot programme will enable TechnipFMC to continue developing advanced energy systems for offshore wind in combination with green hydrogen production and storage.

Deploying these systems offshore is an advantage from an environmental perspective. Designing them autonomously and at scale, is critical to accelerating the Energy Transition.

Strong Consortium

The TechnipFMC consortium consists of leading industrial partners Vattenfall, Repsol, ABB, NEL, DNV GL, UMOE and Slåttland, and is supported by academia, research companies and clusters.

The pilot will allow the consortium partners to prepare the system for large-scale offshore commercial use.

The scope includes the development and testing of an advanced control and advisory system and a dynamic process simulator.

GCE Ocean Technology Collaboration

The Deep Purple energy system was initiated in 2016 and has through its early stages been supported by the Research Council of Norway.

Trond Strømgren, Ocean Technology Innovator at GCE Ocean Technology, was one of the Deep Purple founders.

The energy system has a large global potential and industry collaboration will be important. TechnipFMC and GCE Ocean Technology signed an MoU in June 2020.

– We look upon the Deep Purple energy system as most interesting. On behalf of our members we look forward to hopefully contributing to reduced emissions and added value in the years to come, says Owe Hagesæther, CEO in GCE Ocean Technology.
