Next generation subsea power, protection and control systems supporting renewable energy applications

As the world transitions to renewable power generation, the need for simple, reliable and robust offshore power systems is increasing.

Aker Solutions will present a subsea power system for renewable applications with an example from tidal power, including subsea power collection hubs and subsea substations.

The goal is that technology for power systems for offshore wind, tidal and electrification will consist of identical and standard building blocks. Many of the needed building blocks are in operation and field proven today and there are ongoing development projects in place to close the technology gaps that have been identified. Aker Solutions will present updated technology status for critical building blocks including updated timeline for completion of developments.

Advanced condition monitoring and protection systems have been integrated in power systems for oil and gas application to ensure high reliability in the system and years of uninterrupted service life. These smart solutions can also be leveraged in power systems for renewable application.

However, renewable projects have different requirements compared to oil and gas projects, so potentially these developments can benefit from utilizing simpler and more passive solutions, to reduce complexity and cost. Examples of both smart and passive systems including pros and cons will be presented and compared.
