Objective:
This paper presents 4Subsea’s strain and motion monitoring solution for steel catenary risers (SCRs), featuring a diver-installable subsea clamp. Designed to measure actual loading, the system helps mitigate fatigue risks and flex joint issues. The paper details the deployment of this technology on FPSOs in Brazil.
Method:
4Subsea specializes in offshore asset optimization, integrating autonomous sensors with advanced analytics via 4insight®. The clamp’s sensors continuously log strain and motion data for up to 18 months at 10Hz, with options for extended monitoring through topside cabling. This system enhances predictive maintenance and decision-making.
Results:
By integrating real-world sensor data with digital models, this approach improves riser load assessment, reduces monitoring complexity, and enhances reliability. Operators can recalibrate models over time, allowing proactive asset management, reducing repair costs, and minimizing downtime. This technology supports both new and aging infrastructure, extending asset lifespan.
Novelty:
This autonomous, retrofittable monitoring system provides direct strain measurements and digital twin capabilities, delivering insights into riser behavior during extreme conditions and supporting long-term SCR integrity.
