Electrifying Offshore Operations with Ocean-Powered Systems

Electrification is a growing trend for offshore oil, gas, and CCUS operations. This transition is driven by innovations in robotic and electric systems, alongside the need to reduce operational cost and complexity. However, these electrified operations require incremental power supplies that may not be readily available or cost-effective. This presentation explores the potential for electrifying subsea infrastructure using ocean-powered systems.

Subsea Integration Alliance (SIA) and C-Power are co-demonstrating an electric operating asset powered by an ocean energy system – the SeaRAY Autonomous Offshore Power System (AOPS). The AOPS will provide power, remote asset command and control, and data communications to the SIA asset. The integrated system will be deployed off the Pacific Northwest coast of the U.S. in a North Sea-like environment beginning in 2025. The design and fabrication of the system is now underway, followed by integration, dry testing, and calm water testing prior to deployment.

This presentation will describe the system configuration, hardware and software integration efforts, pre-deployment testing plans, alongside projected industry benefits. The collaboration and planning process – from concept to deployment-ready solution – will be a central focus.

The expected benefits showcased through this project position ocean-powered systems as key enablers in electrifying, digitising, and decarbonising offshore operations.
