Equinor has taken a leading role in driving standardization, cross-operator collaboration, and efficient development on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). By fostering cooperation among operators, the goal is to reduce costs while maximizing the value of shared resources. Key initiatives include the standardization of chemical distribution, elimination of umbilicals, electrification, reuse of existing infrastructure, and the development of common technologies to optimize gas export pipelines. These efforts enable the unlocking of fields that are otherwise too complex to tie back to existing infrastructure or too small to justify new topside installations.
One significant milestone in this strategy was the development of the Vertical Xmas Tree (VXT) on the NCS in 2014+, which was shared across operators. This initiative has evolved into a joint operator development of the electric Vertical Xmas Tree (eVXT), designed to further enhance field development. The eVXT is now set for first implementation on Fram Sør and the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project at Northern Endurance. This development also open opportunities with electrification of other subsea applications such as e-completions and several other needs which will be presented.
Electrification plays a crucial role in optimizing production by enabling faster tuning, quicker restarts, autonomous startup capabilities, and improved management of chokes and reservoirs. These advancements contribute to a more sustainable and cost-effective operational framework on the NCS, ensuring long-term safe resource utilization and economic benefits.
