Aker BP strongly focuses on environmental risk, including subsea leak detection. We have invested significant efforts in assessing different sensor technologies. At the Solveig and Troldhaugen field, Aker BP has installed Acoustic Leak Detectors on the xmas-trees; producers as well as water injectors. The pre-installed software on the acoustic leak detector is designed to suppress other acoustic signatures such as structural vibrations, valve operations, flow noise etc. Based on experience from topside installations, it is recognized that these acoustic noise signatures have a story to tell about the production equipment’s condition and health. By utilizing spare data processing capacity in the sensor and the ability to receive software updates from topside, it has been demonstrated that the leak detector has a dual-function capability.
During commissioning and operation, Aker BP and Naxys Technologies have explored the additional monitoring capability of the acoustic leak detectors to achieve improved monitoring and diagnostics of xmas-tree functions and components. As an example, we will present monitoring of Wing Valve (PWV), Master Valve (PMV) and Choke Valve (PCV), and the related acoustic signatures of opening and closing sequences involving hydraulic accumulator, hydraulic exhaust to sea, pilot valves, cavitation, and confirmation of closed valve. Analysis of acoustic signatures combined with production data as input, aims at providing a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that informs the Operator about irregularities and the need for maintenance.
