The Sustainable Way to Protect Subsea Infrastructure

Platforms, pipelines, subsea structures, and cables – all critical components of offshore activities and data communications – are more vulnerable than ever. The global concern around finding solutions to counter increased risks and security threats is compounded by the necessity to meet net-zero targets and to protect our oceans at the same time as protecting subsea infrastructure.
Many answers to these challenges lie in innovative small-scale wave-powered solutions designed for 24/7 365, net-zero operations which can be deployed to carry out inspections plus monitor activity including CO2 leakage, intruders, or tampering. Resen Waves’ buoys supply uninterrupted energy and integrated data communications for a range of solutions including the ground-breaking CO2 monitoring and leak detection application being tested for the first time as part of the Carbon Capture and Storage solution, Project Greensand.
Wave-powered AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) can minimize crewed ship operations and provide discreet, weather-independent, continuous inspection and monitoring of pipelines, cables, and support structures from rigs to wind farms.
In addition, an increasing range of subsea instrumentation, previously dependent on battery life or human intervention for recharging and data collection, can now be used. This leads to much-improved data integrity plus timely and accurate ‘alerts’ (GPS with 1PPS time reference is possible as a precise clock/time reference with micro-second accuracy) enabling better decision-making and effective counteractions. Join Per for insights into the technology behind these solutions.

Per Resen Steenstrup

Per, a serial entrepreneur, holds an MSc from DTU specializing in energy systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and structural engineering. In 1976 he co-founded his first company Reson A/S (now part of Teledyne) and pioneered the development of multibeam (SeaBat) sonar systems. He combined his extensive subsea expertise with a passion for harnessing ocean energy & established his first large-scale wave energy company in 2003. He founded Resen Waves in 2010. Since then he channeled his concern for the environment with a drive to establish a sustainable future using solutions powered by renewable small-scale wave energy devices with integrated data communications.
