Subsea Hydrogen Storage and Infrastructure – for stable energy as electricity or hydrogen to consumers in the ocean space

Since 2016 TechnipFMC have been performing research and development based on that hydrogen together with subsea knowledge and experience can be utilized to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Hydrogen is an important fuel to reduce CO2 emissions, however at scale subsea technology has potential to offer safer and more efficient environment for infrastructure and storage. This is not only applicable for oil and gas projects, however also for supply of hydrogen to industry, maritime sector, and remote islands.

Many locations have untapped resources that can be made available with the flexibility hydrogen can offer. With surplus energy from not only wind, but hydropower or solar, remote islands, or energy demanding industries planning to convert from e.g. coal to hydrogen as a reducing agent can now also get stable supply of hydrogen with large scale subsea hydrogen storage facilities. By utilizing subsea knowledge, access to lots of space to place large size hydrogen storage and infrastructure in a safe and stable environment.

To cover the different needs, we have progressed qualification of connection system, pipelines, risers, storage tanks, and storage system.

This presentation covers:
– Introduction to the overall concept
– Benefits of subsea technology for hydrogen
– What is needed for the different use cases?
– Where are we now with regards to technology and what are the way forward

Svein Kjenner

Svein Kjenner. Specialist Systems Engineer Svein Kjenner has been involved in several technology development programs within the Subsea energy industry domain. In 2019 he started working with the Deep Purple project where the objective was to enable stable energy from renewables by evaluating hydrogen technologies and combining it with TechnipFMC’s experience. Since 2020, Svein has been managing development and qualification work on subsea hydrogen infrastructure including hydrogen risers, flowlines and GWh storage
