The sea change to net zero; A challenge or an opportunity?

There’s been a sea change in the energy industry. From contemplating an energy transition to now being firmly in one; the electric train has left the station – and this year’s UTC technical sessions, from operators and the supply chain, are on board!

We’re seeing rapid growth in renewables, major policy moves towards hydrogen and steps towards industrial-scale CCS. Yet, we’ll still need oil and gas for some time to come. So many of this year’s technical sessions, themed on low-carbon production, power distribution and crossover/net zero and renewables, will look at the solutions we need for the transition. They’ll cover the use of and or adaption of technologies we have today to support decarbonisation, as well as new technologies that can help accelerate offshore renewable energies development and rollout, now and in the future.

Electrification, of course, features large. We have technical sessions focusing on subsea power distribution from ABB and TechnipFMC, while Aker Solutions will outline subsea HV substations for offshore wind and electrification and Baker Hughes will focus on the subsea high voltage connectors we’ll need for floating offshore wind.

We’ll take a deep dive into hybrid floating offshore wind and wave energy from TechnipFMC, floating solar energy from Equinor and subsea storage of liquid ammonia from NOV.

But many say electrification and growth in renewables will not be enough. So we’ll hear about CO2 injection from Equinor, high-pressure CO2 separation technology being developed by Petrobras, and offshore CO2 handling from Aker Carbon Capture. And we’ll hear about carbon reduction through next generation subsea processing technologies, including subsea compression and subsea water injection.

UTC has a reputation for the quality of its technical presentations. At UTC2021 – proud enabler for a low-carbon future, we seek to maintain that reputation while also shifting the energy dialogue.

The energy transition will largely be driven by policy, but it’s technology that will make it happen and any new frontier in offshore energy production can learn from the expertise we have in the subsea industry.
