Driving Innovation in Subsea Technology – What Does It Take?

The offshore energy sector is evolving rapidly, driven by the need for affordable, sustainable, and secure solutions. At UTC 2025, innovation takes center stage, showcasing developments that are reshaping the subsea landscape. From digitalization to new collaboration models – industry leaders are working together to drive efficiency and unlock new opportunities with new and current technology.

Innovation Through Collaboration – Tiebacks and Marginal Fields

Collaboration remains a key driver of progress. The traditional competitive landscape is shifting, with operators and suppliers recognizing the value of shared knowledge and risk. Subsea tiebacks and marginal fields require cost-effective solutions, making cross-industry cooperation essential.

By fostering partnerships, the development of novel solutions that simplify subsea operations accelerate – optimizing infrastructure and reducing costs. The industry’s mindset is changing. Companies are more open to collaboration, challenging established business models, and are seeking new ways to distribute risk and drive efficiency.

Challenges and Industry Transformation

The biggest challenge today is not developing new technology – but applying it effectively. The Norwegian industry has been comfortable, and therefore conservative through the decades. Hence, economic pressures, sustainability demands, and increased geopolitical risks are today factors for challenging the established.

Digitalization, wireless communication, and automation are reshaping operations, making them safer and more cost-effective. Companies are focusing on standardization, repurposing existing infrastructure, and enhancing power and processing systems to reduce complexity and optimize performance.

Security is an emerging concern, with an increasing focus on protecting offshore infrastructure against cyber and physical threats. Meanwhile, business models are evolving, with risk-sharing agreements and alternative financing structures playing a key role in accelerating adoption.

Let’s Evolve Together

At UTC 2025, the industry’s brightest minds will converge to share insights, challenge conventions, and shape the future of subsea technology. By embracing innovation, collaboration, and simplification, the subsea sector is well-positioned to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

The most important thing we need to do to solve the trilemma is to collaborate and work together, and find solutions together, across competitors, suppliers, and the whole subsea domain.

– Svein Kjenner, Technip FMC

It has been amazing to connect with so many different people, seeing all the cool developments that Norwegian companies are doing here.

– Frida Berglund, DNV

UTC is a very important conference for us because we’re talking to experts in the field, the people who know what the future is like, business and technology wise. It is great to be here to present the technology.
