Aker Solutions accelerates the transition to sustainable energy production

Aker Solutions is wholly committed to propelling the energy transition toward the ambitious goals set for 2030. The supplier-contractor’s advanced subsea technology, digital leadership, project management and a willingness to partner have helped build many of the great energy projects of the past century.
Aker Solutions is a global leader in providing integrated solutions, products, and services to the energy industry. The subsea segment’s mission is to accelerate decarbonization by leveraging unique, subsea expertise and decades of offshore oil & gas experience to provide disruptive, innovative technology derived from a sustainability mindset.
Recent technological advancements and breakthroughs include the following:
ZEUS — taking power to new depths

ZEUS (Zero Emission Underwater Power Station) is a concept that produces gas without emitting anything. It combines high-voltage power production from natural gas with instant carbon capture for injection in a pumpable phase.

The unique aspect of ZEUS is the integrated carbon capture and storage capability, which allows for the immediate capture and injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a pumpable phase for storage deep below the seabed. This process ensures that the CO2 emissions generated during power production are effectively captured and stored, resulting in a zero-emission power generation system.

Jansz-Io Subsea Compression

The Jansz-Io Subsea Compression project aims to enhance gas recovery and production from the Jansz-Io field offshore Australia. The compression solution advances the technology applied at the Åsgard Subsea Compression System, a triumph of technology that has operated flawlessly for eight years.

The project involves the installation of a subsea compression system that compresses gas directly from the seabed. By implementing this subsea compression technology, Aker Solutions seeks to optimize gas flow, increase production rates, and extend the field’s productive life.

The subsea compression system will be located at 1,400 meters water depth 140 kilometers from shore. The Jansz-Io Subsea Compression solution demonstrates the advancement of subsea compression technology and its viability in challenging deep offshore environments. It paves the way for the increased adoption of subsea compression at other offshore fields.

All-Electric X-mas Trees (XMTs)
Significant advancement has been made by Aker Solutions in the development of an “All-Electric XMT” for subsea applications. Aker Solutions has shared this technological journey with major operators which support the XMT’s development technically and financially.

By transitioning to all-electric systems, we achieve greater efficiency and control in subsea operations. Electric actuators — where batteries replace springs — provide rapid, precise response times that enable greater accuracy in the regulation of flow rates and pressures. The actuators have been qualified down to a water depth of 3000 meters but withstand applications down to 4000 m.

Apart from precision, electric systems are inherently cleaner and more environmentally friendly, as they eliminate the potential for hydraulic fluid leakage.
Standardisation
Aker Solutions’ approach to standardization helps deliver futuristic and sustainable solutions that address the industry’s evolving needs. An example of their approach is a vertical tree portfolio that offers standardized systems to different operators, including those involved in carbon capture and storage initiatives. The delivery concept ensures consistency and facilitates seamless integration for both brownfield and greenfield projects. Standardized interfaces maximize the efficiency and reusability of tools and equipment across projects, while helping streamline operations.
Digitalisation
Digital Live Tracker – supply chain reduces environmental footprint
With their new Digital Live Tracker, Aker Solutions can see and geographically locate all their product stock worldwide. Tracker data can highlight umbilical activity to assist project planning and offer logistical savings, while identifying idle equipment that might need repair. The system offers better supply forecasts, a smaller environmental footprint and efficient resource use — all of which will improve project deliveries and bottom lines.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
Aker Solutions has achieved notable advancements in the field of engineering and design through the utilization of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for prototyping and verification.

By leveraging CFD, the accurate modelling and simulation of fluid flow scenarios — including those in subsea environments — has been made possible. It empowers engineers to gain valuable insights into design performance while optimizing system components.

CFD for prototyping and verification demonstrates a commitment to utilizing advanced digital tools and techniques to enhance engineering processes. By harnessing the power of CFD, Aker Solutions accelerates the development of innovative subsea solutions and ensures designs meet stringent performance and safety criteria.
The development of SWIFT
Developing the innovative technology SWIFT (Submersible Wireless Installer for Tubing) was aimed at revolutionizing subsea operations. SWIFT is designed to streamline and simplify the installation of subsea tubing systems in challenging offshore environments.

Traditionally, the installation of subsea tubing involves complex and time-consuming processes, often requiring extensive use of heavy equipment and ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). SWIFT introduces a game-changing approach by employing wireless technology to remotely control the installation process.
Tackling the energy trilemma
Aker Solutions is deeply committed to addressing the energy trilemma, a complex challenge encompassing energy security, energy affordability and environmental sustainability.

Enhances Energy Security

Aker Solutions subsea production systems efficiently access of oil and gas resources at challenging water depths without traditional surface platforms. Company-wide renewable energy expertise helps diversify energy supplies to enhance energy security.
Promotes Energy Affordability
Innovative solutions that enhance energy accessibility foster energy affordability. The Fornebu-, Norway-based company are dedicated to optimizing solutions and trimming costs, and a standardized portfolio of offerings aims to ensure project affordability.
Environmental Sustainability
Aker Solutions subsea innovations are designed around environmental sustainability, while addressing the future of the subsea industry. CO2 emissions are trimmed by cutting materials use, reducing equipment power needs, unmanned operations and digitalization.
Seabed CCS
The Northern Lights Project showcases a commitment to advancing CCUS initiatives. NL Phase 1, now complete, utilizes standard XMTs for the well-injection system. This leverages extensive knowledge and experience in subsea operating environments.
Collaboration for common goals
Aker Solutions appears keen to develop partnerships, alliances and other collaboration models and have established several key strategic agreements.

Teaming-up with the right players is an essential element in the success of Aker Solutions. An alliance of more than five years with Aker BP and Subsea 7 has helped secure several key energy projects.

The collaboration is based on a business model where risks and rewards are shared by all parties, and the operator and suppliers work as a team on several projects that seek to find and reuse the most cost-efficient solutions.
Subsea Joint Venture
In 2022, SLB, Aker Solutions and Subsea 7 announced their intention to form a joint venture to drive innovation and efficiency in subsea production. The agreement will bring together a portfolio of innovative technologies such as subsea gas compression, all-electric subsea production systems and other electrification capabilities that can help customers meet their decarbonisation goals.

These world-class businesses are uniquely positioned to offer subsea technologies to help the industry increase hydrocarbon recovery while reducing subsea project costs. The JV transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the second half of 2023.
